Composition Rules and Guidlines

Before

After

The objects on this picture are arranged to make the picture look like everything is in the right place. There are many rectangular shapes in the picture. I notice that the photographer used principles of design; putting emphasis on the main object and by using lots of lines on this picture. There are also patterns and proportions on the picture because of all the shapes and angles. To make this picture better, I cropped the guy on the left out to put even more emphasis on the main object. I also straightened the picture so that it would not look so crooked.

10 Rules of Composition
In this article I liked where it says to stay away from the middle. I think this rule was useful because avoiding the middle leaves the picture to have more space for more background. If it was in the middle, it would be very boring and have less room for the background.

18 Rules of Composition
The rule of patterns used in this article was a great rule. There are many lines and square-like shapes in this picture. Having patterns in the picture helps the picture show more depth and composition.

5 Elements of Composition
This article states how depth of field is significant when taking a picture. This puts more emphasis on the picture, makes it look more unique.

5 Easy Composition Guidelines
I like the leading lines rule in this article. The people in the background show this effect by making a line down the pathway towards the main subject.

Photography Rules of Composition
This article shows simplicity as an important rule of composition. The simplicity of this picture makes it look very realistic and unplanned.

First Portrait Assignment

I think I did a very good job trying to take pictures that made people forget about the camera, for my first attempt. I did not like how my shadow appeared in the fourth picture because it made the picture look not as real. My favorite picture I took was the second picture because I caught her laughing, and there were almost no shadows to disturb the picture. Overall I liked all the pictures I took but know I can do much better to try and make people forget that there is a camera in my hands.

First Photo Outing - Principles of Design

This is my favorite picture. It meets both my elements of design, patterns and proportions. The arrows create a pattern by rotating in a loop around each other. The arrows are also proportional by the way the pointy part of the arrow coincides with the end of it, to make a ribbon-like effect. This creates "a feeling of unity".
